USPTO is Looking to Hire a Senior-Level Emerging Technology Expert

CIO Jamie Holcombe said the official will support efforts to scale artificial intelligence, robotic process automation and more.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office officially opened applications Monday to hire a senior-level emerging technology technical expert to help bolster the agency’s existing and expanding efforts to develop, integrate and accelerate technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotic process automation within its operational sphere.

The new hire will report to and directly advise USPTO Chief Information Officer Jamie Holcombe, who plays a critical role in steering the agency’s recent strategic, technological revamp on the frontlines.

“Modernization efforts are ‘full steam ahead’ and more critical than ever given customer demands,” Holcombe told Nextgov via email Wednesday. “Scaling AI, ML and other technologies is a huge priority, and we need a visionary expert to join our team.”

The agency will consider a flexible duty station for the position, according to the recruitment post on USAJobs, and the salary is listed to range between $131,239 to $181,500 per year. While applicants do not need a security clearance to apply, they must be U.S. citizens or nationals to be considered.

“We’re looking for that special person with experience and zeal for the mission to get the newest tech tools in the hands of examiners and applicants in an AGILE environment—FAST, AFFORDABLE, and leveraging the BEST TOOLS that actually WORK!” Holcombe wrote. 

The job posting includes a range of responsibilities and functions the official will be expected to uphold and deliver, such as involvement in high-level choices that’ll need to be made regarding emerging tech infrastructures and architectures across the agency’s enterprise. The expert will also work directly with USPTO’s product, operations and other relevant teams to spot and capture technological solutions that could support ongoing efforts. 

The agency also aims for the to-be-hired official to put their “proven experience in applications of emerging technologies in decision augmentation” to use, conduct proofs of concept and pilots for promising use cases that align with USPTO’s work—and much more.
