Having served as acting chief information officer since January, Gallagher’s permanent appointment is “effective immediately,” the agency said.

NASA has selected its acting chief information officer to continue the role in a permanent capacity, the agency announced Tuesday.

Sean Gallagher has been serving as acting CIO since January. He has also held the positions of deputy CIO and senior advisor for transformation at the agency in recent years.

“Sean Gallagher’s leadership has been instrumental in strengthening NASA’s IT foundation and ensuring our workforce has the secure, modern tools needed to enable groundbreaking missions every day,” NASA Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson said in a press release. “As CIO, Sean will continue advancing the agency’s technology capabilities to support discovery, innovation, and mission success across NASA.”

Gallagher joined NASA in 2012, where he served as CIO of the agency’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. He has experience working with all NASA centers to “implement efficient and effective IT operating models,” particularly in the aeronautics, space, research and engineering and test missions arenas.

Prior to his government roles, Gallagher served as a Signal Corps officer in the U.S. Army.
