In a survey of U.S. and U.K. IT decision makers, three out of four reported onboarding a new cloud provider during 2020.

Hybrid cloud environments have emerged as the dominant cloud strategy among industry and the public sector, according to a survey released recently by Illinois-based IT services company Ensono.

The survey found that 71% of IT decision-makers in the public sector use a combination of public and private cloud platforms, with only 9% fully using public cloud and 14% using only private cloud platforms.

The survey, which polled 500 full-time technologists in a variety of industries across the U.S. and U.K, found legacy technologies standing in the way of further cloud adoption. Nearly 1 in 10 respondents are using unspecified legacy technologies in their IT infrastructures, and one-third still operate a mainframe environment in their IT stacks.

The survey indicates significant industry movement across industry in cloud over 2020, likely related to the COVID-19 pandemic that forced millions to work remotely. Nearly three in four respondents vetted and onboarded a new cloud provider during 2020.

Microsoft Azure was the most-used public cloud provider among those surveyed, followed by Google Cloud, IBM and Amazon Web Services. Security and compliance were the top drivers among cloud decision-makers (52%), followed by technical capabilities (42%) and pricing (35%). More than half (56%) said security considerations had a “significant impact” on cloud decision-making.
