Smarter Driver: Will Self-Driving Cars Ever Be Legal?

The technology is still in the testing phase, but it has many governments worried.

The United Nations recently amended a nearly 50-year-old rule to allow self-driving cars on roads around the world. Drivers must be behind the wheel, however, and must be able to take control at a moment's notice. The ruling, though, doesn't cover several countries including Japan and the United States. 

Here in America, states are divided on the topic. Four states have allowed testing of driverless vehicles on the streets, while many more have decided against the technology.
