TSA Opens Registration for Public Meeting on Cybersecurity Regulations

The agency’s advisory committee typically meets behind closed doors, but they are required to hold at least one public meeting per year.
Members of the public can now sign up to attend a meeting of the Surface Transportation Security Advisory Committee and will be granted access on a first-to-register basis, according to a notice set to publish in the Federal Register Monday.
The committee, which advises the leader of the Transportation Security Administration on “the development, refinement and implementation of policies, programs, initiatives, rulemakings and security directives” for entities including oil and gas pipelines, as well as rail and freight carriers, is scheduled to meet publicly on Nov. 17.
TSA on Tuesday announced new cybersecurity requirements for the industry under a year-long directive and noted plans to embark on a rulemaking process to regulate the sector.
“While the STSAC is exempt from the Federal Advisory Committee Act,” the law “requires that TSA hold at least one public meeting each year,” according to the notice.
The agenda will cover “committee and subcommittee briefings on activities, key issues and focus areas for FY 2023—cybersecurity information sharing; emergency management and resiliency; insider threat; and security risk and intelligence.”
