Services nominate officers for key information systems positions

Air Force chooses commanders for the Electronic Systems Center and the 14th Air Force, while the Army names chief and deputy chief of staff.

The Air Force and Army this month promoted several officers to key positions in command and control, space, and information systems.

The Air Force nominated Maj. Gen. Charles Davis for promotion to lieutenant general and tapped him as the new commander of the Electronic Systems Center at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts, which manages command-and-control programs and has an annual budget of $3 billion.

Davis is currently commander of the Air Armament Center and the Air Force program executive officer for weapons at the Air Force Materiel Command at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. He will replace Lt. Gen. Ted Bowlds, who plans to retire later this year.

The Air Force also nominated Maj. Gen. Susan Helms to become lieutenant general and commander of the 14th Air Force at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, which supports operational missions for all the combatant commands. Helms, who now serves as director of plans and policy at the U.S. Strategic Command in Omaha, Neb., will replace Lt. Gen. Larry James.

James has been selected as deputy chief of staff for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance at the Headquarters Air Force in Washington.

The Army has nominated Col. Joseph Brendler to become chief of staff for the Defense Information Systems Agency, where he will hold the rank of brigadier general.
