Federal 100: Deborah Diaz

Deborah Diaz
Deputy CIO
NASA

The work: Spearheading one of the most successful data center consolidation efforts in government.

The impact: In one year, Diaz eliminated 13 data centers and 19 server rooms, with 173 servers either consolidated or relocated.

The nuts and bolts: Diaz used automated tools to create a master inventory of hardware and software at 79 data centers, which went a long way toward easing the consolidation process. All told, NASA recouped 22,300 square feet of building space and more than $300,000 in annual energy costs. Thanks to her work, the agency expects to reduce its data centers by 50 percent by 2015.
