The work: Leading the modernization of IT and telecommunications services at DOE’s Hanford Site in Washington state.

The impact: Under Higgins’ creative leadership, a massive cleanup effort at the former plutonium production site is now supported by a consolidated, cloud- and mobile-enabled IT infrastructure that costs 30 percent less to operate and is more energy efficient.

The nuts and bolts: Higgins’ aggressive agenda helped achieve IT modernization objectives, including deployment of a voice-over-IP phone system, eight years ahead of schedule. His emphasis on new handheld technologies is improving worker safety and reducing cleanup costs.
