Administration seeks input on declassification
As part of the White House’s open government initiative, officials ask public to comment on declassification policies.
White House officials want input on how to reform government declassification policies, according to a blog post published today on the Open Government Initiative blog.
Members of the Public Interest Declassification Board are seeking comments on the current policies. The Public Interest Declassification Board is an advisory committee established by Congress that promotes public access to records related to national security decisions and activities.
The deadline for comments, to be posted on the Office of Science and Technology Policy’s blog, is July 1.
Board members also want to know what a new executive order should include and how the government can make the declassification process more transparent.
Classified information has long been a matter of debate. Some presidential administrations have leaned toward classifying all information possible on national security grounds, while others prefer to restrict access only when absolutely necessary.
