FBI CIO to Retire

FBI Chief Information Officer Zalmai Azmi announced today that he would be retiring to spend more time with his family.

Azmi has been executive assistant director and CIO for the FBI's IT branch since 2004. During that time he has been behind a number of important IT programs, including the FBI's Sentinel case management systems, which is expected to be completed in May 2010. He also stood up the office of the chief knowledge officer and deployed a knowledge management program through which the FBI can share information with other intelligence agencies and law enforcement organizations.

Before joining the FBI, Azmi was CIO for the Executive Office for the U.S. Attorneys. He also served as a communications and intelligence specialist with the Marines for seven years and has won several awards, including the Presidential Rank of Distinguished Executive Award and the President G.W. Bush Award for Excellence in Counter Terrorism Support. He holds a bachelor's degree in information systems from American University and a Master's in management information systems from George Washington University.
