HASC: Too Many Generals

While Defense Secretary Robert Gates has plans to cut the number of generals by 102 from 967 today to 865 over the next two years, the Military Personnel Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee still views Defense as over-generaled.

In the markup of its portion of the 2012 Defense Authorization Bill, released yesterday, the subcommittee said it plans to cut the number of generals or admirals authorized for joint duty billets by 14 and the number of Air Force generals by eleven, with all this star power gone from the ranks by Oct 1, 2013.

The subcommittee also approved a measly 1.6 pay raise for all ranks next fiscal year, not much of a bother for a one star who already pulls down $11,785 month. But, I don't think an E-4 who makes $2,364 a month while serving in Afghanistan will view a $37.82 a month bump as munificent.
