Out of what are surely thousands of federal Web applications, colocation company Terremark hosts just 10. Colocation companies, or "colos," provide the space and electricity to set up data center infrastructure. Unlike proprietary data centers from Google and Microsoft, colos are typically situated on the outskirts of major cities. Terremark has a facility near Washington, D.C., and the company generates 24 percent of revenues from its federal customers.
