Smart grid shouldn't be too smart

There are many societal, technical and economic reasons it's a good idea to upgrade our national electricity grid to be "smart." But that smart grid shouldn't be too smart. The Internet was intentionally designed to be composed of many very small pieces with no centralized control. Our national grid would benefit from the same approach, namely lots of small, interconnected transmission pieces with decentralized "dumb" controls that deal only with their own segments.
