Use of E-Verify hits some bumps

States are increasingly cracking down on illegal immigration by requiring companies to check their employees against a controversial Homeland Security Department database. The state effort has sparked protests from businesses, immigrant advocates and civil libertarians, who say the checks could inaccurately flag legal residents as illegal immigrants. Companies typically have done the checks themselves by reviewing workers' documents, such as passports.
