SSA moves to Internet-based phone system

In October, the Social Security Administration was managing more than 1,600 different phone systems. In three years, it will manage one. The agency is transferring its varied telephone operations to a single Internet-based network. SSA is the biggest agency yet to move completely to Internet-based voice telephony, known as voice-over-Internet protocol or VoIP.
