Justice, Education give school security guidance

The U.S. departments of Justice and Education last month announced the joint release of a guide to help school and law enforcement officials assess school security needs and consider appropriate security equipment to make schools safer.

The guide, titled "The Appropriate and Effective Use of Security Technologies in U.S. Schools," provides information on myriad school safety technologies, including video surveillance, weapons detection and entry control.

The document was produced collaboratively by the National Institute of Justice, the Education Department's Safe and Drug-Free Schools program and Sandia National Laboratories, part of the of Energy Department.

Print versions of the guide became available earlier this month, and it is also available online at www.ojp.usdoj.gov/nij/new.htm#security.
