Bureau of Industry and Security seeks CIO
The export control agency, which has had well-documented cybersecurity woes, is now hunting for a top technology official.
After nearly seven years without one, the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security is looking for a permanent CIO.
The bureau posted the job opening late last month.
Acting CIO Eddie Donnell has been the top technology official since June 2009, and since then, the bureau has been neglecting basic cybersecurity practices, according to Commerce's inspector general. The bureau's work includes sensitive activities such as policing the export of military-grade technologies.
"Not only did BIS not take corrective action to address basic IT security weaknesses for over five years, it also did not always develop" required plans of action using Commerce's cybersecurity assessment and management tool, the IG wrote in an October 2015 report, noting that the bureau dodged Commerce's oversight and was vulnerable to cyberattack.
The bureau's most recent permanent CIO was Dawn Leaf, who left in 2009. She is now the Labor Department's CIO.
The new CIO will be charged with revamping security across data centers and systems, including those that handle export licensing and enforcement. The Washington-based Senior Executive Service position will pay as much as $185,100.
The bureau is accepting applications through Feb. 19.
