Hackers pilfered email passwords and other data from 16 million users, most of them German, according to a report by Germany's Federal Office for Online Security. The agency didn’t disclose details, but said victims should digitally scrub their computers and change their online profiles.

According to The Local, the data theft was discovered during an analysis of illegal botnets.

Authorities have set up a website where Internet users can check to see if they have been affected, The Local reported.
