The 100 Best Places to Work in 2019, According to Glassdoor

The list is determined by employee feedback.

Last year, Facebook was No. 1 on the job site Glassdoor’s list of the best places to work. This year, it dropped to number seven.

The lesson: Employees don’t like it when you share the personal data of 87 million users with Cambridge Analytica, enable human rights abuses in Myanmar, and get accused by former executives of “ripping apart the social fabric of society.” Also: Employee benefits matter.

In Facebook’s case, the free food, competitive salaries, and office perks seem to have overshadowed the numerous scandals and high-profile management snafus that have plagued the social network in the past year—enough so that it remained in the top ten on Glassdoor’s ranking. Google, meanwhile, fell from fifth place place last year to eighth place.

The Glassdoor list is determined by employee feedback, which makes sense given Glassdoor has one of the most robust data sets of employer reviews in the world. Aside from benefits, employees cited social impact, company culture, and the potential for career growth as the most consistent themes for what makes a place great.

Surprisingly, none of the “big five” tech companies cracked the top five spots on the list. Those honors instead went to the consulting firm Bain & Co., which topped the ranking, followed by video-calling software maker Zoom, U.S. west coast fast-food mainstay In-N-Out Burger, a construction industry software provider called Procore Technologies, and Boston Consulting Group, a Bain rival.

For both Procure and In-N-Out, perhaps the two most surprising names near the top of the list, employees consistently cited professional development opportunities as the reasons for their high praise. “The BIGGEST pro of Procore, is the opportunity for career growth. Procore is all about making you better and letting you follow your interests,” a Procure software engineer wrote on Glassdoor.
