Energy Department CIO Brese headed to private sector
Bob Brese’s last day on the job as CIO at the Energy Department will be Sept. 5.

Department of Energy CIO Bob Brese is leaving government for the private sector, the department confirmed Aug. 18.
Brese's email to DOE staff was referenced in initial reports on Federal News Radio. The email didn't say where Brese was going after his departure, but said his last day would be Sept. 5.
Deputy CIO Don Adcock will take over as acting CIO, a department spokesman said.
Over a long career in federal government IT, Brese built a reputation for pushing innovative savings and contracting methods. He made FCW's Fed 100 list in 2013 for establishing Energy Savings Performance Contracts that focus on enterprise IT efficiencies and use savings generated by data center consolidation and IT modernization to fund improvements for DOE's enterprise and desktop infrastructures.
To ensure that the contracts succeeded, he engaged with stakeholders to reach consensus on requirements, solutions, timelines, roles and duties. He also approved a strategy to share services, cut costs and capitalize on new technologies by overhauling DOE's IT environment. The result was $120 million in savings over the next decade and $10 million a year in energy and operational savings.
Brese also was a leader in the cybersecurity community and a key contributor to White House efforts on cyber legislation and policy, as well as technology research, development and deployment.
He had also served as the DOE's deputy CIO, as deputy CIO for DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration and as director of NNSA’s Defense Nuclear Security Program Evaluation Office. Before that he had been a U.S. Navy submarine officer for 22 years.
