Letter: Wishing Azmi the best in his retirement

A reader fondly recalls working with retiring FBI Chief Information Officer Zalmai Azmi.

Regarding "FBI CIO Azmi will retire in October"

[FBI chief information officer] Zalmai Azmi deserves all of the praise and best wishes he will receive as he retires. Against all odds he led the bureau out of a dark, backward era.

While still at Office of Management and Budget, I first met Zal when he had just come to the FBI.

At that first meeting, in his typical gentlemanly, humble and matter-of-fact way, he told several of us from OMB what he planned to do to reverse years of failed FBI case file automation efforts.

We walked away impressed, but skeptical. Hadn't we heard it all before? Yes, we had. But, what we couldn't know at the time, it makes all the difference when you hear it from Zal.

I wish him and his family all the best in whatever the future holds.
