Letter: EMP threat scarier than "Saw V"

A reader writes that the potential damage from an electromagnetic pulse attack is particularly alarming because EMP attacks appear to be easy to stage.

Regarding "Report: U.S. not prepared for EMP attacks": What is really scary is that a general description of the major components of a non-nuclear electromagnetic pulse device were published a few years ago in either Popular Science magazine or Popular Mechanics magazine. It did not seem to be too difficult for a determined group to assemble.

Taking out certain strategic electrical substations all at the same time could cause a collapse of major portions of the power grid if the attackers have knowledge of the inter-system controls. That is not an impossibility if they have any kind of intelligence network at all.

More dangerous for the public would be an EMP attack against the control tower at a major international airport in California or the northeast.

More scary than "Saw V"!!
