What's all this talk about not being able to fire government employees? [Ask Milt, Oct. 11.]

Here in southern Indiana, they have little process of having half the employees as temporary, at times up to 10 years or longer. The employees sign one-year contracts that stipulate they can be released at a moment's notice. (I thought there was a law that you had to be made permanent if in a temp position for more than one or two years.)

Also, I know of a person who was fired when he refused to transfer to Korea. He was in a mandatory-rotation career program.

One more thing: Cronyism is alive and well in government agencies. Toothless unions have to fight it every day.
