IT 'Neanderthals' doing fine
I am writing in regard to your editorial, "A boost for techies." As the lead-in indicates, most federal IT workers do feel like invisible pieces of furniture.
Why is it that management has such a hard time understanding that the "program" and the "network" are one and the same? I do not believe that the senior-level folks really don't get it. But it appears to be a mystery to most senior-level folks on how to fix the problem.
Mr. Daniels' comments regarding the caliber of federal IT workers doesn't sound like leadership to me. I guess there's some question as to the caliber of leadership in government as well, because these problems never seem to be resolved.
The last time I looked, we IT Neanderthals have managed to keep most of the outdated, misaligned and stovepiped systems operational with minimal and often contradictory guidance from on high. I wouldn't mind a head-to-head comparison with the private sector IT Cro-Magnons.
