Securing the 'command center'

Other security efforts under way, as detailed in the July 14 memo to senior

Pentagon officials from Rudy de Leon, the undersecretary of Defense for

personnel and readiness:

* Conducting random entry/exit inspections beginning after Aug. 1, focusing

not only on laptop computers but on briefcases and other hand-carried materials

and including asking employees to step through metal detectors and related

sensors.

* Inspecting secure facilities, including the offices of de Leon and

Defense Secretary William Cohen, to ensure proper procedures are in effect

and understood by all employees.

* Establishing Sept. 5-8 as Security Awareness Week, during which managers

will ensure every military member, civilian employee, and assigned tenant

contractor undergoes security training and that unnecessary classified information

is appropriately destroyed or retired.

* Requiring that all new employees — even those not cleared to access

classified information — receive an orientation briefing and attend a comprehensive

security awareness briefing within two weeks of employment.
