President's Y2K council disbands

With its last job done, the President's Council on Year 2000 Conversion

packed up its boxes and closed its doors last week.

Led by John Koskinen, the council coordinated a nationwide effort to

fix computers and other processor-based systems that would have interpreted

the year 2000 as 1900, possibly corrupting data or crashing the system.

The council, through the Information Coordination Center, worked around

the clock from Dec. 30, 1999 to Jan. 3, 2000 to monitor events in the United

States and abroad. It had remained in place through the end of last month

to watch for any potential problems with the Feb. 29 leap year date, which

was viewed as another potential snafu.
