Gateway PC sells silence

The company's E-6300 desktop uses larger, quieter cooling fans and space for fast, hot processors.

Gateway officials are betting that silence will sound sweet to customers who purchase the company's new E-6300 desktop. The new PC is based on a Balance Transfer Extended (BTX) chassis that uses larger, quieter cooling fans and offers plenty of space for fast, hot processors and expansion items.

The E-6300 offers a configure-to-order, tool-free chassis; 12-month-plus lifecycle; and preloaded Gateway Client Manager 8.1 software, which is based on LANDesk Software technology.

This model includes an Intel 915G chipset featuring a Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading Technology and an 800 MHz front-side bus, up to 4G of DDR2 400 MHz memory and Advanced Technology Attachment hard drives scaling up to 250G.

For multimedia tasks, the E-6300 features the integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 with integrated audio and 128M of shared memory.

The seven-bay BTX case offers plenty of expansion room and multiple ports, including six USB and two FireWire. It also includes three PCI slots, one PCIe X16, one PCIe X1 and Gigabit Ethernet.

The E-6300 comes with Microsoft Windows XP Professional and several DVD-RW/CD-RW or floppy drive options.

The base price is $989, which includes a standard, three-year limited warranty.
