Congress added a hard deadline to a long-planned upgrade of the system that processes and tracks veterans’ benefit appeals via the Veterans Appeals Improvement and Modernization Act, which was signed into law in 2017. Given and his team of digital service experts had 18 months to build and field a modern system that gives veterans several new paths and timelines for adjudicating appeals, with the goal of reducing the time to resolve such appeals from years to a matter of months.
