Hopes dim for bipartisan cybersecurity legislation
Two Senate bills are stalled while compromise seems unlikely.
The prospects of a bipartisan cybersecurity deal are dim, according to a report in NextGov.
Two bills have been working their way through Congress for several weeks. The Cybersecurity Act of 2012, which the Barack Obama administration and Senate Democratic leaders support, “has been stalled by opposition from a group of Republican committee leaders who say that the bill gives Homeland Security officials too much authority over certain private networks,” writes Josh Smith.
Meanwhile, the Republican-backed Secure IT Act has also made little headway.
One primary issue is the degree to which the bills give government control over industry networks, Smith reports. The Cybersecurity Act gives the government more power than Republicans want to support.
