Supercommittee gives up

The special committee assembled to identify more than $1 trillion in budget cuts has given up, according to published reports.

The so-called "supercommittee" called it quits on Nov. 21.

The failure of the group to reach a consensus triggers a process called sequestration, automatic cuts to civilian and defense department discretionary spending. However, Congress could theoretically circumvent that consequence through legislation.
