In the future, federal data center consolidation could go much further and create three huge "digital Fort Knox" centers, Kundra said.
Federal Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra told reporters that while the White House is planning to close 800 data centers by 2015, but even further down the road, he sees a lot more consolidation.
“I envision three major federal data centers, Digital Fort Knoxes, that’s where we are headed,” Kundra said.
Kundra also talked about taking advantage of up-and-coming trends, including more focus on bringing federal agencies up to the level of private sector in their IT capabilities.
That could happen by giving federal employees each “a $2,000 subsidy to purchase their own laptop computers and phones,” he said.
