FCW Insider: Freeland leaves PTO CIO job

We are working to get confirmation, but I have heard from several people that David Freeland, the chief information officer for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, is leaving that post. I don't have a copy of the note he sent to staff -- hint, hint... , thank you much -- but there is a note that he sent to staff.Deborah Diaz, PTO's deputy CIO, has been named the acting CIO, we hear.

Freeland joined PTO back in 2005. was the former deputy commissioner for management information systems at the Texas Human Services Department.

PTO has been beefing up its staff of late. Chris Niedermayer recently joined PTO after leaving the Agriculture Department.

And speaking of USDA... It has been all quiet on Independence Avenue. USDA has had most of its senior leadership leave. I had heard some discussion that USDA had hired an executive search firm to help fill the vacancies both on the CIO and CFO organizations, but... we haven't been able to confirm that. I still remain perplexed how work is getting done over there with so many vacancies. I was talking to one person at IRMCO about people's frustrations with the lack of information about who is doing what and why USDA is so tight lipped about the agency's plans. I keep hearing that there is a "plan," but, frankly, I don't know what that plan is... and I can't find anybody else who does either. Again, surprisingly, all of this seems to operate under the radar. It is just curious to me.
