4chan forum popular among hacktivists has been hacked
Nonprofit // Web Services
The attacker used a software bug to take over database administrative privileges, but likely was aiming at one victim.
4chan claims to have detailed logs of what was accessed due to the way the hacker extracted information. The logs indicate that primarily moderator account names and credentials were targeted.
The software defect has since been patched.
“The hacker apparently said the motive for the attack was to expose the posting habits of a single user,” eSecurity Planet reports.
The intrusion was limited to “imageboard moderation panels,” a reports queue, and some tables in the backend database, wrote Christopher Poole, founder of the image-based bulletin board 4chan. (h/t Softpedia).
According to Poole, the credentials of three 4chan Pass users were compromised.
No payment information was breached, he said.
