The data breaches just keep coming, and now it looks it might not even be safe to use your plastic to purchase a good night's rest at an upscale hotel.
White Lodging Services Corp., an Indiana-based management company that oversees blockbuster hotel chains, including the Hilton, Marriott, Sheraton, and Westin, appears to be the latest victim to suffer a theft of customer credit and debit card data, cybersecurity blogger Brian Krebs reported Friday.
Sources in the banking industry have told Krebs that a "pattern of fraud" began appearing in March on hundreds of cards used at Marriott establishments. White Lodging acknowledged an investigation is ongoing and said it will provide additional information as soon as it's available.
The breach appears to have hit those who used their cards at restaurants, gift shops, and other places within the hotels in question and, notably, not the "front-desk computers which handle guests checking in and out."
Krebs, a former Washington Post reporter, has largely been responsible for uncovering the massive data breaches reported in recent months at national retail giants Target, Neiman Marcus, and Michael Stores.
