1.82-million member Ubuntu forum vandalized and raided

Hackers lifted usernames, passwords and email addresses from an online community associated with the Linux open-source based operating system. And the perps graffitied the website as well.

Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, acknowledged the breach in an announcement posted on its main forum page.

The passwords were encrypted.

An estimated 1.82 million users are subscribed to the forums. The site is believed to be using vBulletin, a popular Web-based forum software.

"Ubuntu One, Launchpad and other Ubuntu/Canonical services are not affected by the breach," the notice stated.

The Twitterverse was not amused.

"You must feel proud defacing a site by volunteers. They dedicate time and effort to make a free distro. Worst kind of 'hacker'," said one user directed towards the alleged hacker's Twitter account.
