25,000 employee ID records compromised at Salem State U.

Education // Massachusetts, United States

A server infected with a virus has jeopardized the “personal identification information” of 25,000 university employees, according to Salem State officials, who declined to specify the type of details on the machine.

The college notified affected personnel mid-March. “The breach affects people who have received a paycheck from the university — from full-time staff to students who were employed on campus.”

It is unknown whether the data has been used illegally. The school is offering ID protection services for one year to those affected.  Virus detection software alerted the college to the problem, he said.

According to SCMagazine.com, the worm was identified as "Vobfus."  Security researchers say this breed of virus acts as "downloaders of other malware” that can be used by attackers to remotely steal data on compromised machines.
