Key Alabama government network breached

Someone gained access to the state network and several computers during a breach of the firewall protecting the state's information technology system. State Homeland Security Director Spencer Collier said the breach is still being investigated and the scope of the attack is still being assessed. The director declined to comment on which computers or departments were targeted or potential suspects in the attack. The breach was discovered by Alabama Information Services Division staff who noticed suspicious activity on a state network on Jan. 16. The division notified the director of the Alabama Department of Finance and the homeland security director on Jan. 17.
