The Pentagon inspector general's website has been inaccessible for days because of technical difficulties within the agency, IG officials said Tuesday evening.
"Due solely to internal factors, the DOD IG Internet Web page has been unavailable over the past several days," IG spokeswoman Bridget Serchak said. "The Web page should be available in the near future."
Earlier in the day, U.S. Cyber Command officials had said they were probing the outage. On Monday the site displayed a "Welcome" message from what appeared to be a Microsoft tool for hosting content on the Web, according to one site visitor.
Microsoft's site describes the program, Internet Information Services (IIS) for Windows Server, as "a flexible, secure and easy-to-manage Web server for hosting anything on the Web. From media streaming to web application hosting."
At 10:00 p.m. on Monday, a spokeswoman for the Defense Department's chief information officer referred inquiries from earlier in the day about the site disruption to the Cyber Command. Around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, a Cyber Command official told Nextgov the organization was investigating the matter.
