Feds look to data center consolidation
Fierce Government IT
The federal government has embarked on a study of its data centers, hoping to consolidate the more than 1,100 now in use, save money and create new efficiencies. Federal CIO Vivek Kundra said that Treasury CIO Michael Duffy and Department of Homeland Security CIO Richard Spires will spend most of this year developing a plan to cut costs and reduce energy consumption by merging the centers. Kundra said some agencies have too many data centers, but are leery of change. He noted that some agencies fear loss of control of their data, but added that government must alter how it operates to be more efficient.
