While the Internet has vastly expanded the reach of criminals, the digital fingerprints that these activities leave can be a powerful investigative tool -- for those with the knowledge and equipment to use it. These days, "practically every crime, from drug dealing to murder, involves digital evidence," says Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley, whose office handles state felony prosecutions in the nation's most populous county.
