51 percent of U.S. Web surfers use social networking sites, says survey

More than half of all adult Internet users in the United States either visit or maintain a profile on at least one social networking site, according to a new study conducted by Forrester Research. In its latest survey on social technologies, Forrester found that 51 percent of online U.S. adults utilize social networking sites such as Facebook or LinkedIn, a large increase from the 25 percent of users who reported using social networking sites in 2007. Forrester says that the surge in social networking for online Americans "reflects the appeal of Facebook, as both press coverage and invitations from friends suck more of us into social networks."
