Hackers defaced the memorial site of Austria’s Mauthausen concentration camp, on the 70th anniversary of the fall of the Nazis.

The website was quickly taken down by the company managing it.

Austrian officials suspect that far-right extremists may be responsible for the vandalism, as such groups have hacked several websites recently, Austria's Der Standard news website reports.

The head of Austria's Mauthausen Committee - a group promoting human rights and democracy - condemned the hack.

The Nazis killed more than 100,000 people at Mauthausen between 1938 and 1945.

The camp - one of the biggest in the Third Reich - was liberated by U.S. troops in May 1945. On May 10, there will be commemorations of the liberation at Mauthausen.
