The airline realized it had a problem when customers observed that some of their bonus points were missing. Unauthorized users had breached U.S. Airways’ system, according to company officials.
Hackers gained access to customers' usernames and passwords for Dividend Miles accounts. The accounts contain information such as birthdays, addresses, answers to security questions and the last four digits of credit cards.
US Airways released a statement that said in part it will "restore all mileage balances as quickly as possible." The airline also is providing customers with a year of free identity theft monitoring and has hired an outside security firm to review the company's security.
