Security compliant supermarket chain hit by credit card fraud anyway

The supermarket chain Bashas’ Family of Stores discovered malware in their network that let hackers view cardholder data. The company claims, at the time, it was compliant with payment card industry security standards.

The discovery came after customers reported fraudulent activity on their accounts after purchasing good at various supermarket locations.

"There have been over 400 customers affected by suspicious activity."

The lesson: "Fundamental IT security measures will stop the simple, and likely more prevalent attacks, but may not stop something more sophisticated. . .It’s important for merchants to find out where their specific risks and vulnerabilities are, and take measures to try and create an environment that is more secure than just basic compliance."
