A new poll conducted for the Democratic Leadership Council has found while voters viewed President Clinton as a "New Democrat" who believes government has a more limited role, they saw congressional Democrats and the overall Democratic Party as liberals who favor big government solutions.
"President Clinton has redefined what it means to be a Democrat and has regained the confidence of the American middle class," Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., the DLC chairman, said at a press conference today. "But the Democratic Party has not completed the successful transition that [Clinton] has. We have a ways to go in translating the success of President Clinton."
DLC President Al From said voters' "starkly different perceptions of the president and congressional Democrats explain why he won re-election decisively and they failed to regain control of the Congress."
