IT Dashboard Updates Reviews

The government's IT shop on Wednesday announced it has finished updating a recently-launched White House Web site with reviews of all major federal IT investments.

When the so-called IT Dashboard launched on June 30, only 20 percent of the IT programs had been evaluated. The site is aimed at injecting transparency into the progress and cost of federal IT investments that total $38.6 billion for fiscal 2009.

Federal Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra blogged about the completion of evaluations, ahead of a scheduled Aug. 7 CIO Council meeting on best practices for program management.

"As a result, CIOs are now better poised to advise the head of the agency regarding whether to continue, modify, or terminate a program or project," Kundra wrote. The Veterans Affairs Department said in July it had halted progress on 45 projects that raised red flags during its review for the dashboard.

The evaluations by agency CIOs were due on July 31. Users can see the new ratings and short comments by clicking on an individual investment and then hitting the "Evaluation" graphic at the bottom of the page.

"We need to adopt an evidence based approach to governance. . . so we can report, analyze, monitor, and predict performance," Kundra added.
