SAMHSA seeks input on IaaS solutions
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is exploring the possibility of transitioning to a government community cloud -- and perhaps to one provider in particular.
WHAT: A sources-sought notice from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration -- a division of the Health and Human Services Department – as it looks to learn more about availability and capability of infrastructure-as-a-service cloud providers.
WHY: SAMHSA, like many agencies, is looking to harness the versatility and accessibility of a cloud-based infrastructure to unify its "fragmented" system of platforms and providers. The agency hopes "to leverage synergies, including data sharing, simplified sign-on, and cross-platform integration."
SAMHSA plans to transition all of its applications and websites to a single government community cloud. The goal is to support for enterprise "development, integration, testing, training, staging, troubleshooting, and all pre-production, as well as production, activities."
And, based on an initial draft of the notice, SAMHSA has an interest in Amazon Web Services in particular. The Aug. 12 version explicitly called for input on AWS GovCloud solutions. The final version, posted Aug. 15, was revised to inquire about any "Infrastructure as a service" cloud solutions -- though "GovCloud" references remain scattered through the text.
