A huge convenience or a massive security risk?

For all of those who ever lost their keys, the idea of an app that can unlock a car might seem like an ingenious idea.

Volvo is developing just that. The app will use a Bluetooth connection, so if a driver is nearby, he or she can simply unlock their car with a smartphone. The app will also let you share access to your vehicle with family and friends -- as well as allow you to unlock rental cars.

Understandably, there are some security concerns. If your smartphone is lost or stolen, will anyone and everyone have access to your car?

Fortunately you can disable access to your vehicle by using the app on another device. But that could be cold comfort if it's too late. The app would also necessitate that users keep their phones charged. A dead smartphone could potentially leave drivers stranded.

Volvo says a pilot program is rolling out this year.
