Is a Voice-Controlled Lock Really Secure?

Could you get locked out if you have laryngitis?

A voice-controlled smart lock sounds like an ingenious idea—no more losing or fumbling with your keys. But is it a security risk?

August's Smart Lock works with a few different platforms including Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa, using a combination of Bluetooth communications and vocal commands.

While each system works slightly differently, if someone got a hold of your smartphone, he or she could also ask Siri to unlock your door. Or if you've paired the August system with Alexa, potentially yell at Alexa to unlock the door from outside your front window.

Thankfully, Alexa does require a vocal passcode to do your bidding; just don't make it an obvious one, like 1234.
