Why you definitely shouldn't throw away your old iPhone or Android.

With the recent announcement of Apple's new products, it would appear inevitable that seemingly outdated phones and devices would soon fill up junk drawers across the country. But it doesn't have to be that way.

Numerous websites can compensate you for your old phone, either in the form of store credit or cash. Just make sure to shop around for what works best for you, whether that's major retailers like Best Buy and Amazon or niche sites like Gazelle and EcoATM focused solely on trading in used devices.

You can also donate your phone to a charity like Cell Phones for Soldiers, which provides devices to active duty service members so they can communicate with their families.

But no matter where you choose to send your old device, be sure to read the fine print about what happens to your personal information. Also, at most places, you will never be able to get your phone back after you give it up.
